Satellite Tagging Program

To advance the conservation of sharks in the open ocean, we are integrating shark tracking with tracking of fishing vessel-based technology.

Sharks are tagged and tracked year-round in North American waters, using the latest satellite-based technologies. Once tagged, animals will be tracked via satellite for a period of up to a year by orbiting satellites, sending transmissions every time their dorsal fins break the surface. Tracks are actively integrated into the Global Fishing Watch in collaboration with partner Oceana, to integrate the shark movements with fishing activity.

Impact: Data is used to calculate residency in Exclusive Economic Zones over space and time, and to calculate the overlaps between sharks and fishing activity. This information will improve our understanding of where sharks are most vulnerable throughout the year in the open oceans.
